#24 Lighthouse Moonrise at Palo Duro Canyon

Taken during the last few moments before sunset, the Lighthouse Moonrise at Palo Duro Canyon State Park shows the enigma of geological history of the Texas Panhandle. The setting sun created shadows that creep along the bottom and right edges of the image to tell a story of the last moments of the day. The rising Moon in the upper left background begins the subsequent chapter in a never ending epoch: a conflict between day and night that plays out continuously, day after day.
Formed by the erosive actions of casually unrelenting Panhandle weather and the constant flow of water from the headwaters of of the Red River, specifically the Prairie Dog Town Creek Fork, Palo Duro Canyon was carved through the Ogallala layers beneath the flat plains of the Llano Estacado, creating the second largest canyon in the United States, ultimately revealing ultra fine details and a spectacular array of colors through four geological periods that reveal 240 million years of the Earth's history.
The Lighthouse formation, called a pinnacle, a spire or a hoodo, is formed when a piece of the caprock remains in place while the surrounding material is obliterated by erosion. The residual structure becomes a monument of geological time and the banded layers of colored soil: brown, red, teal, maroon, grey and yellow, evoke visual metaphors of the skirts of Spanish dancers. They dominate the walls of the 800 feet deep fissure in a spectacular way and when contrasted against the cobalt blue sky become inspirations for artists like Georgia O'Keefe, who were deeply effected by it's beauty and majesty.
Created with Fuji Velvia 100 speed film and scanned with a Nikon Super CoolScan film scanner, the image portrays the color saturation of the actual scene. The photograph is printed on acid free ultra-fine grained cotton canvas imported from Switzerland and produced by renowned printmaker Steve Zeifman of Santa Fe, New Mexico. The print material is specially treated to accept ink jet pigment. It is guaranteed for 100 years.
